American Shaman agrees to suspend kratom sales in Missouri

Governor DeWine is asking the Ohio Board of Pharmacy to ban all natural chemical compounds in kratom, including mitragynine, 7-OH, and the less common but more potent compound mitragynine pseudoindoxyl (MP). (COLUMBUS, Ohio)— Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced today that he is calling on the Ohio Board of Pharmacy to immediately designate all natural and synthetic kratom compounds as illegal drugs. Much of the opposition to the DEA’s proposed kratom ban was rooted in how many people have credited home-brewed kratom tea as a lifesaving DIY off-ramp from fentanyl and opioids. This is what gives kratom its opioid-like, pain-relieving and euphoric effects. We recently sat down with Kroll, whose research focuses largely on herbal medicines, to learn more about the issues with the popular-yet-unregulated kratom, often used as an alternative to opioids for pain relief and as a self-therapy for alcohol and opioid addiction.

For now, the kratom and 7-OH industry are waiting with bated breath to see whether Trump will continue his flurry of drug-related executive orders. Not everyone in the kratom community supports a 7-OH ban. “Banning these products will not eliminate demand,” Subeck says.

It limits the 7-OH level of any kratom product to 2% of the product's total alkaloid content and bans synthetic alkaloids. Kratom is a leafy plant that can be consumed in capsule or powder form or mixed into food or drinks, producing opioid-like effects, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The Mayo Clinic says while some users turn to kratom to help fight opioid addiction, it labels the drug “unsafe and ineffective.” Physically, the drug can cause everything from liver damage to dry mouth. Christopher McCurdy, a behavioral pharmacologist at the University of Florida that has been studying Kratom for years, believes consumption patterns in the United State are different than the plant’s original use. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has used an emergency rule to classify concentrated 7-OH as a Schedule I controlled substance in Florida.

When isolated in its concentrated state, 7-OH, the active metabolite present in the kratom plant, becomes a highly potent analgesic.
